第一节 阅读下列短文,选出最佳选项(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分) A

The American expression “shoo-in” means someone or something that seems sure to win a race or competition.

Before a big football game, supporters of each team are certain to argue about which side will win.

Sometimes, however, one team appears so much stronger than the others that everyone agrees it will win. The stronger team is a shoo- in. There is no way that it can lose.

The expression shoo-in comes from horse racing. It comes from the word “shoo”. That’s not the shoe we wear on our foot. It’s another word, S-H-O-O. “To shoo” is an expression hundreds of years old that means to urge a person or animal to move in a desired direction.

Many years ago, dishonest riders sometimes agreed secretly to control their horses so that one chosen horse would win the race. All but one of the riders would hold back their horses. The chosen rider would shoo his horse ahead of the others, and win the race.

The other riders would secretly bet large amounts of money that the chosen horse would win.

The public soon learned about such races. They began to call the winner of such a race a “shoo-in”.

These days, people use shoo-in to describe any athlete or competitor

that seems certain to win, even without cheating. American runner Edwin Moses won more than one hundred races before he ran the hurdles race in the nineteen- eighty- four Olympic Games. Everyone said Moses was a shoo-in, which he could not lose. And they were right. He won the gold medal.

31. One of the dishonest riders was sure to win the race because _____________.

A. the other riders had agreed to fail in the race B. he used to be best at riding C. the public had confidence in him D. he could control his horse easily

32. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. “Shoo-in” originated in the word “shoo”. B. The public did not know they were being cheated. C. Some riders bet a lot of money on the chosen horse. D. US runner Moses deserved a shoo-in.

33. The main idea of the passage is that “shoo-in” _______________.

A. is used to admire a person who seems to be sure to win a race B. is a word used to describe a dishonest person

C. is used for any athlete or competitor that seems too clever to be cheated

D. is used for anyone or anything that is certain of winning a game 34. This passage can best be titled ______________.

A. Be Sure to Win B. Shoo-in, a Sure Winner C. Winner in a Competition D. The Birth of Shoo-in

2 What is life? What’s the truth of our life? We usually don’t realize what we have got until we really lose it; we do not know what we have been missing until it arrives, either.

It takes an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone, but it takes a lifetime to forget someone. Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they will love you back. Do not expect love in return; but if it does not, be content with the fact that it has grown in yours. Do not rely on one’s appearance; it can deceive you. Do not rely on wealth; even that fades away. Rely on someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past. You cannot go on well in life until you let your past failures and heartaches go off. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people do not necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness waits for those who try, and those who appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives. Always put yourself in others’ shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you are the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

35. If you put yourself in another person’s position, _______. A. you should depend on your imagination

B. you should put on other people’s shoes C. you shouldn’t do what will hurt other people D. you should believe in other people

36. According to the passage which of the following statements is TRUE? A. If it takes you a short time to love someone, you will easily forget

the person.

B. If you give someone your love, you are sure to receive love in return. C. We often don’t know what we have lost until it happens someday. D. It is wise not to rely on anybody because you are likely to be tricked. 37. In the last paragraph the writer actually tells us that a person in the world should be one who _______.

A. does good for other people and is respected and loved by them B. can live happily and forget the past C. has made a lot of money for himself before he dies D. can accept the suggestions made by others

38. In this passage, the writer wants to tell us ________.

A. where to go with other persons B. how to treat our life C. what to do in our life D. how to get on well with other persons

Human beings have spread to every continent, sometimes driving other animal species to extinction (灭绝) in the process. It has become the most widely spread species on the planet, occupying mountains and valleys, deserts and jungles, shorelines and islands, yet always finding some good means of living in these widely differing environments.

The total weight of all living members of the species is far heavier than that of any other animal, and the human population is now growing so rapidly that it will double within the next thirty-five years.

What accounts for the success of our species? The answer, in a word, is culture. We create culture, but culture in turn creates us.We are consequently no longer the victims of the environment. We make our own social environment, inventing and sharing the rules and patterns of behaviour that shape our lives and we use our learned knowledge to make the natural environment more suitable to live in. Our shared culture is what makes social life possible. Without a culture transmitted (传承) from the past, each new generation would have to solve the most basic problems of human existence over again. It would have to think up a family system, to invent a language, to discover fire , to create the wheel,

and so on.

Culture frees us from relying on the slow and accidental process of physical evolution(进化)by offering us a new, purposive , efficient means of adapting to changing conditions. If we waited for natural selection to enable us to live at the North Pole, to fly to the moon, or to live under the sea , we would wait forever. Unlike other animals, we can self-consciously adapt to our environments and can adapt environments

4

D. Paris and Cannes.

to meet our own needs.

43.The writer’s purpose in the first paragraph is to show ______.

A. how crowded our planet is B. how successful human beings are

C. that human population is now growing rapidly

D. that other animal species have been very weak in the competition with man 44. According to the passage , human beings ______.

A. are the victims of the environment

B. rely on other animal species for their success C. make social environment and change natural environment

D. change social environment and make natural environment

45. It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. culture should rely on the process of physical evolution B. we would have to wait forever to fly to the moon

C. we can never adapt environments to meet our own needs

D. family systems belong to culture 46. The best title for the passage would be “________________” .

A. Human Beings B. Natural Selection

C. The Role of Culture D. Social and Natural Environments

E About five years ago, an American electrical engineer named Scott Brusaw and his wife Julie camp up with the idea of putting solar panels(控制板)on the ground rather than the roof. Then they began to develop the Solar Roadways. The Solar Roadway is an intelligent road that provides clean renewable energy using power from the sun. while providing safer driving conditions, along with power and data delivery. They predict that the Solar Roadway will pay for itself through the generation of electricity along with other forms of income and that the same money that is being used to build and resurface current roads can be used to build the Solar Roadways. Each Solar Road Panel measures roughly 4 meters by 4 meters and contains a microprocessor(微处理器) that monitors and controls the panel, while communicating with neighboring panels and the vehicles traveling

overhead. The inventors suggest that this provides a communications device every 4 meters on every road which could be used for example to

warn drivers of cars which are moving across a centre line and various

other speed control problems. The top of the Solar Road panels is made

of super-strong glass that would offer vehicles the tractions(抓地力) they need.

According to the inventors, the Solar Roadway creates and carries

clean renewable electricity and therefore electric vehicles can be

recharged at any conveniently located rest slop, or at any business that

has paved Solar Road Panels in their parking lots. The inventors say their Solar Roadway has many functions and

advantages from main roads to driveways, parking lots, bike paths,

sidewalks and runways. The Federal Highway Administration has given

Brusaw $100,000 to develop the invention and Brusaw hopes to build a smart-road parking lot in the coming spring. 47.In the inventors' opinion, the Solar Roadway ________.

A.is too expensive to build at present B.costs no more money than current roads

C.can provide as many data as present computers D.will bring them a large sum of money

48.The underlined word \"they\" in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

A.the panels B.the inventors

C.the researchers D.the vehicles 49.The Solar Roadway includes all the following advantages except________.

A.providing safer driving conditions

B.helping drivers communicate with each other while driving

C.creating and carrying clean renewable electricity D.warning drivers of various speed control problems 50.It can be inferred from the text that ________. A.the Solar Roadway has already been put into use

B.$100,000 is only enough to build a smart-road parking lot C.the Solar Roadway is not available for gas-powered cars

D.future electric vehicles can be charged anytime and anywhere

As you grow rapidly through your teenage years, you will experience a lot of changes. The changes may seem difficult. They may seem to happen quickly.

Don’t panic! You will deal successfully with them! You are a young adult

now! With more responsibility, you will find more freedom to make your own choices. This is a time to be well informed about making choices. In this way you can make healthy balanced decisions. They will help shape the future.

You may already know your career path or you may have no idea at all what you want to do. Both situations are fine! Work hard and the right opportunity will present itself to you. Young adulthood means greater freedom and more choices. You will probably want to be independent.

But try not to shut your family out of your life. You should learn to think of others even though you are old enough to look after yourself. It is also perfectly natural at this time for you to spend more time with your friends than your family. Choose your friends wisely. A true friend will stand by you no matter what happens.

This period is a part of the life cycle. There are some people who will be with you throughout life’s journey. There will be some people with whom you part and go separate ways. Leaving school can be hard. The reality is that you may not even see all of your classmates again.

You are a young adult. It is your life. No one can live it for you. The choices that you make from now on will be your choices. So making the right choices will be important to you. Life is for living. Enjoy your life wisely.
