M: Excuse me. Could I smoke here, madam?

W: I’m sorry, but you see that my baby is sleeping here. Why don’t you go to the smoking area between Carriages 8 and 9? (Text3)

W: Oh, that’s too bad! I just lost another 50 dollars in this stupid car. M: I’m not surprised. It’s always out of order. (Text4)

M: What a nice piano! How wonderful!

W: Yes, it is. My father bought it for me last week. And I like it very much. (Text5)

M: Hello, Mrs. White, what can I do for you?

W: I don’t know what’s the matter with me. I am always feeling tired. I am usually worn out at the end of the day. (Text6)

M: Hello, Joan. You’ll never guess what happened yesterday. I got locked in the office. W: What do you mean “locked in”?

M: Well, my colleague didn’t realize I was still in the office, so when he left he locked the door from outside.

W: Oh, no. Then how did you get out?

M: I called another colleague who was in the office next door. I had to push the key under the door for him so he could let me out.

W: That’s funny. I’ve never heard of anyone getting locked in rather than locked out. M: I know. My wife laughed at me all evening. (Text7)

W: What can I do for you, young boy? M: Yes, I want to buy a geography book. W: I’m sorry, but we’ve sold out.

M: Sold out? It’s unbelievable! How can that be?

W: We received the wrong number of books. We’re still short of thirty books.

M: Then what should I do? This morning in my first class our teacher asked us to review two units for Thursday.

W: We’ll be getting the rest next Monday. M: But that doesn’t help now!

W: Why not ask someone who has a book to share with you? M: That would be nice. Thanks! (Text8)

W: How can I help you, sir? M: I need a suit, please.

W: We have sweat suits, casual suits, and business suits. Which kind do you want? M: The last one.

W: Well, they come in three different price ranges. There are on-sale clothes, fashionable suits, and best-sellers.

M: What’s the price range for each?

W: On-sale clothes start at 30 dollars and go as high as 100 dollars. The fashionable suits on the second floor are between 250 and 1,500 dollars. Best-sellers are on the third floor, and they are between 50 and 500 dollars. M: I can spend up to 75 dollars.

W: In that case, have a look at both the on-sale clothes and the best-sellers. M: Where are the on-sale clothes? W: Go straight down to the first floor. M: OK. I’ll go there first.

(Text9)

W: Darling, we have only one towel. M: Shall I call room service?

W: Yes, and tell them to send up some breakfast to our room, too. M: OK. What would you like for breakfast?

W: I think I’ll have some toast, a boiled egg, and coffee with cream. M: But you usually have only a cup of milk for breakfast at home.

W: Well, when you don’t have to cook, you enjoy the meal more. Don’t you think so?

M: Yes. You always do so much for our family, dear. That’s why I always wanted you to have a holiday. You need a little relaxation.

W: You’re the most considerate husband in the world. M: Thank you, and you are the most perfect wife in the world.

W: You’re too sweet, you know. Oh, can you help me with the hot water? I want to take a shower, but I don’t know how to turn the hot water on. I’ve never seen equipment like that in a bathroom before. (Text10)

Back to the news. Last Friday a storm hit two villages destroying fourteen houses. Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifteen others had broken windows. One person was killed, and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital. A number of other people received small injuries. Altogether over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm. A farmer said the storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise. A few minutes later their house fell down on top of them. They managed to climb out, but then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe but very frightened.

A woman said that her husband had just left for work when she noticed that her house was shaking. She rushed outside immediately with her children. There was no time for her to take anything. A few minutes later, the roof came down. Soldiers went to the area to help the people in trouble.
