After the accident, he was unable to move in the snow. Fortunately, Kelsey came to hisassistance. “I was shouting for help, but my nearest neighbor is about 400 meters away, and it was10:30 pm,” Bob explained. “But my Kelsey came. By the next morning, my voice was goneand I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking.”

Kelsey’s companion kept him warm by lying on top of him. She licked his face and handsto keep him awake. “Kelsey kept barking but never left my side,” Bob recalled. “She keptme warm. I knew I couldn’t give up and that it was my choice to stay alive.”

Bob spent 20 hours in the freezing cold. When he finally lost consciousness, his dog keptbarking. Finally, hearing the barking, Bob’s neighbor discovered him at 6:30 pm on NewYear’s Day and called the emergency services at once. When Bob arrived in hospital, his bodytemperature was below 21°C.However, doctors were surprised to find that he didn’t have anyfrostbite(冻疮). They believed it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep him warm. Dr.Chaim Colen, the doctor who treated Bob, said, “Animals can help and his dog really savedhim... He was very fortunate.

22.(8分)Every man wants his son to be somewhat of a clone, not in features but in footsteps. As he grows you also age, and your ambitions become more unachievable. You begin to realize that your boy, in your footsteps, could probably accomplish what you hoped for. But footsteps can be muddied and they can go off in different directions.

My son Jody has hated school since day one in kindergarten. Science projects waited until the last moment. Book reports weren’t written until the final threat.

I’ve been a newspaperman all my adult life. My daughter is a university graduate working toward her master’s degree in English. But Jody? When he entered the tenth grade he became a “vo-tech” student (技校学生).They’re called “motorheads” by the rest of the student body.

When a secretary in my office first called him “motorhead”, I was shocked. “Hey, he’s a good kid,” I wanted to say. “And smart, really.”

I learned later that motorheads are, indeed, different. They usually have dirty hands and wear dirty work clothes. And they don’t often make school honor rolls.

But being the parent of a motorhead is itself an experience in education. We who labor in clean shirts in offices don't have the abilities that motorheads have. I began to learn this when I had my car crashed. The cost to repair it was estimated at $800. “Hey, I can fix it,” said Jody. I doubted it, but let him go ahead, for I had nothing to lose.

My son, with other motorheads, fixed the car. They got parts from a junkyard, and ability from vo-tech classes. The cost was $25 instead of $800.

Since that first repair job, a broken air-conditioner, a non-functioning washer and a non-toasting

toaster have been fixed. Neighbors and co-workers trust their car repair to him.

These kids are happiest when doing repairs. They joke and laugh and are living in their own relaxed world. And their minds are bright despite their dirty hands and clothes.

I have learned a lot from my motorhead: publishers need printers, engineers need mechanics, and architects need builders. Most important, I have learned that fathers don^ need clones in footsteps or anywhere else.

My son may never make the school honor roll. But he made mine.

1、The author let his son repair the car because he believed that . A.his son had the ability to fix it B.it would save him much time C.it wouldn't cause him any more loss D.other motorheads would come to help 2、What did the author realize in the end?

A.It is unwise to expect your child to follow your path. B.It is important for one to make the honor roll. C.Architects play a more important role than builders. D.Motorheads have greater ability than office workers.

23.(8分)When Noah Ready-Campbell was a young adult, he worked for his father’s construction company. Back then, he dreamed of a day when robots might take over the dirty, repetitive(重复的)parts of his job, such as earth moving. Years later, Ready-Campbell left his job as an engineer with Google to make that dream come true.

Ready-Campbell formed a company called Built Robotics, which develops technology to produce self-driving heavy equipment. Ready-Campbell says the company’s goal is to make construction safer, faster and less costly. The construction industry struggles to find skilled workers and faces a growing number of unfinished projects. But self-operating machines are changing the nature of building.

Workers at Berich Masonry in Englewood, Colorado, recently spent several weeks learning how to operate a robot called SAM, or the Semi-Automated Mason. SAM is a $400,000 machine from the company Construction Robotics, It can lay 3,000 bricks in eight hours. That’s several times more than a human bricklayer can do in the same period. But humans are still needed to load bricks into the SAM and make sure it works right. Bricklayer Michael Walsh says the SAM lessens the load on his body. But he doesn’t think it will take his job.

Brian Kennedy agrees, too. His organization supports the rights of construction workers in the United

States and Canada. Kennedy says the union is not worried that machines will replace human workers any time soon.

The rise of construction robots comes as the building industry faces a severe decrease in labor supply. One recent study showed that 70 percent of construction businesses have a difficult time finding skilled workers. Mike Moy heads a mining operation for the building materials supplier Lehigh Hanson. He says it’s difficult to find people who even know how to operate some of the necessary equipment. “Nobody wants to get their hands dirty any more. They want a nice, clean job in an office,” he noted. 1、What does the first paragraph say about Noah Ready-Campbell? A.He enjoys doing repetitive work. B.He is now an employee of Google. C.He used to work in construction field. D.He joined Google to realize that dream.

2、Which of the following is one of the aims of Built Robotics? A.Increasing construction speed. B.Enlarging construction quantity. C.Improving construction designs. D.Changing construction steps.

3、What can be inferred about SAM from the text? A.It can totally replace human bricklayers. B.It is complexly built but easy to operate. C.It is unable to work completely automatically. D.It is cheap but works much faster than humans.

4、In Mike Moy’s opinion, what prevents many construction businesses from finding skilled workers? A.Their low pay. B.Their potential risks.

C.Their heavy work loads. D.Their poor working conditions.

24.(8分) Fifty years ago I had a young family of three boys. My husband Johnny and I left them with a friend while we made a rare trip to the cinema in Liverpool.

It was dark and pouring with rain but with the headlights shining on the road, we saw something ahead of us. Johnny pulled to a stop and I jumped out, ran to the grass edge and grabbed a small, wet, and frightened creature. I wrapped it safely in my woollen hat and insisted that my husband turn back and head for home. We thought it was a baby rabbit because it had long ears and was grayish-brown in colour. Once home, we

filled a box with torn-up newspaper and a warm towel. We named our new animal Bobsy as we had no idea of its sex.

Sadly though, on the third day with us, it caught its back foot in a door and we quickly realised it was broken. We rushed to the vet(兽医), who said, “It’s only a rabbit, I’ll put it to sleep.” Our response was a very determined, “No way !”We found anther vet and told that she was a baby hare. We were told we should continue to keep her in her box for a week and her foot would heal.

After her recovery, Bobsy learnt to use the kitty litter tray. She would comb her long ears with her front paws. The local paper heard about this and came to our house to take her photo and write a story about her. We had her for seven wonderful years before we moved to New Zealand and we will never forget her. 1、Why did Johnny stop his car suddenly? A.He came across a friend. B.The headlights went out. C.His car broke down on the road. D.He noticed something in front of him.

2、What happened to the little animal on its third day? A.It slept on a door. B.It was stuck in a door. C.Its foot got seriously injured. D.It fell off from the top of a door.

3、Which best decribes the family’s attitude towards the rabbit? A.Considerate.

B.Cruel.

C.Hopeless.

D.Indifferent.

4、What is the passage mainly intended to do?

A.To tell the importance of protecting small animals. B.To remember unusual experiences with a small rabbit.

C.To persuade people to give generously and receive thankfully. D.To make the rabbit widely known to local people by paper.

25.(10分)Scientists think they have the answer to a puzzle that confused even Charles Darwin: How flowers evolved and spread to become the most important plants on Earth.

Flowering plants, or angiosperms, make up about 90% of all living plant species. In the distant past, they outpaced (超过) plants such as conifers and fems (针叶植物和蕨类植物),but how they did this has been a mystery. New research suggests it is due to genome (基因组) size.

Hundreds of millions of years ago, the Earth was dominated (支配) by ferns and conifers. Then, about 150 million years ago, the first flowering plants appeared on the scene. They quickly spread to all parts of the world, changing the landscape from muted green to a variety of colours.

Why angiosperms were successful and diverse on Earth has been debated for centuries. Charles Darwin himself called it a“mystery”, fearing this apparent sudden leap might challenge his theory of evolution.

Kevin Simonin from San Francisco State University in California, US and other researchers wondered if the size of the plant’s genetic material—or genome—might be important. They analysed data held by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on the genome size of hundreds of plants, including flowering plants, gymnosperms (a group of plants including conifers) and fems. They then compared genome size with anatomical (结构上的) features.

This provides “strong evidence”, that the success and rapid spread of flowering plants around he world is due to “genome downsizing.”

By shrinking the size of the genome, which is contained within the nucleus of the cell, plants can build smaller cells. In tum, this allows greater carbon dioxide uptake (摄入)and carbon gain from photosynthesis, the process by which plants use light energy to turn carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.

The researchers say genome—downsizing happened only in the angiosperms, and his was “a necessary condition for rapid growth rates among land plants”. 1、What do you know about angiosperms? A.They are dominant plants on Earth. B.They are rare plants in South Africa. C.They are topical plants in South Asia. D.They are extinct plants in the world. 2、It can be inferred that .

A.Charles Darwin was confident of his theory of evolution B.Kevin Simonin is probably an American biologist C.Kev in Simonin works in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew D.Charles Darwin succeeded in figuring out the flower evolution

3、Which of the following contributed to the success and diversity of angiosperms? A.The weaker conifer. B.The larger nucleus.

C.The smaller genome. D.The stronger cell.

4、Which of the following is the best title? A.How Angiosperms Conquered the World? B.W hat Puzzle Confused Even Charles Darwin? C.Why Gymnosperms Were Successful on Earth? D.When Angiosperms Outpaced Conifers and Fems?

In a society that tends to 18 everything in terms of dollars and cents, we learn from a young age to consider the costs of our 19 in financial terms. But what about the personal and social costs 20 in pursuing money over meaning? These are exactly the kinds of costs many of us tend to ignore — and the very ones we need to consider most.
