You may think, salt is just a simple cooking element we shake on our food for a little extra taste. But salt is much more than that. Without salt our muscles would not move. Our nervous systems would not operate. Our hearts would not beat.
But do not think rubbing salt in a wound will help. Doing that would be painful and not heal the wound. To rub salt in a wound is an idiom that means to purposefully make a bad situation worse.
Early humans got the salt they needed to stay alive from the animals they killed. But advances in agriculture led to a diet low in salt. So, humans needed to find other sources. Those who lived near the ocean or other natural sources for salt were lucky. Those who did not had to trade for salt. In fact, people used salt as a method of payment in many parts of the ancient world. The word “salary” comes from the word “salt”.
Salt also played an important part in population movement and world exploration. Explorers understood that if they could keep food fresh, they could travel longer distances. So they used salt to preserve food and explored the world.
Salt was so important that, according to food historians, it was traded pound-for-pound for gold. Today, people still use the expressions “to be worth one's salt” or “worth one's weight in salt”. The expressions describe a person of value.
A person might also be called salt of the earth. That description means he or she is dependable and trustworthy. However, when you say “I think we should take what he said with a grain of salt” you mean you accept it but maintain a degree of doubt about its truth.
24.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.Salt plays an important part in our life. B.Salt makes food tasty.
C.Salt is considered to be part of our muscles. D.Salt is sure to damage nervous systems.
25.A beggar's bread was stolen last night, which means________. A.salt of the earth C.a diet low in salt
B.rubbing salt in a wound D.worth his salt
26.If you describe a person as a great help, you mean________. A.he is called salt of the earth B.he is often taken as a grain of salt C.he often uses salt to preserve meat D.he is worth his weight in salt
27.Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A.Salt Is More Than a Four-letter Word. B.Salt Is a Basic Element in Cooking. C.Salt Is a Word with a Long History. D.Salt Is Popular with Different Persons.

La Gomera is the only place in the world that has a whistle language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of a valley can not easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard. Some of the best whistlers can be heard from four miles away and the record is seven miles.
The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.
We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of telephone. If the sick person is quite far away from the town, people pass the message from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help one another in the same way when a car breaks down or a cow is lost.
The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live on for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in different parts of a country. But on La Gomera you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.
28. If a person on La Gomera is ill, ________.
A.the whistle language will help pass the message to the doctor B.people will take him to town by carriage C.his family will take him to the hospital D.others will phone the doctor in town 29.La Gomera is special because ________. A.we don't know its complete history

Speed-reading is a necessary skill in the Internet age. We skim over articles, e-mails and Wechat to try to grasp key words and the essential meaning of a certain text. Surrounded with information from our electronic devices, it would be impossible to cope if we read word by word, line by line. But a new trend calls on people to unplug and enjoy reading slowly, listing benefits beyond the intelligent stimulation.
A recent story from The Wall Street Journal reported on a book club in Wellington, New Zealand, where members meet in a cafe and turn off their smart phones. They sink into cozy chairs and read in silence for an hour. Unlike traditional book clubs, the point of the slow reading club isn't exchanging ideas about a certain book, but to get away from electronic devices and read in a quiet, relaxed environment. According to the Journal, the Wellington book club is just one example of a movement started by book lovers who miss the old-fashioned way of reading before the Internet and smart phones.
Slow readers, such as The Atlantic's Maura Kelly, say a regular reading habit sharpens the mind, improves concentration, reduces stress levels and deepens the ability to sympathize.
Another study published last year in Science showed that reading novels helps people understand others' mental states and beliefs, a fundamental skill in building relationships. Yet technology has made us less attentive readers. Screens have changed our reading patterns from the straight and left-to-right sequence to a wild skimming and skipping pattern as we hunt for important words and information. Reading text punctuated with links leads to weaker comprehension than reading plain text. The Internet may have made us stupider, says Patrick Kingsley from The Guardian. Because of the Internet, he says, we have become very good at collecting a wide range of interesting news, but we are also gradually forgetting how to sit back, reflect, and relate all these facts to each other.
Slow reading means a return to an uninterrupted, straight pattern, in a quiet environment free of distractions. Aim for 30 minutes a day, advises Kelly from The Atlantic. “You can squeeze in that half hour pretty easily if only during your free moments, you pick up a meaningful work of literature,” Kelly said. “Reach for your e-reader, if you like. Kindles make books like War and Peace less heavy, not less substantive, and also ensure you'll never lose your place.”
32.The book club in Wellington mentioned in Paragraph 2 shows ________. A.the decline of electronic devices B.the new trend of slow reading C.the importance of exchanging ideas D.the increasing number of club readers
33.According to Patrick Kingsley, people are stupider partly because of ________. A.a non-stop reading pattern B.the straight, left-to-right screen C.the lack of reflection
D.a wide range of interesting news
34.According to the passage, slow reading ________. A.cures the memory loss of elderly people B.promotes the current technology advances C.provides people with a quiet environment D.contributes to understanding among people 35.What's the best title for the passage? A.Benefit of Reading Clubs. B.Reading of the Internet Age. C.Return of Slow Reading. D.Influence of Speed Reading
